about
This first track is inspired by a Leonard Cohen lyric from his song Anthem, "There's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in" I wrote this during the George Floyd protests. The next line, "There's black in everything.” Rings true to me on many levels. Culturally, spiritually, physically, politically for better or for worse the African diaspora has profoundly shaped us all.
One of the first things we see is the light as we emerge from the darkness of the womb. It’s the beginning of the trauma of life itself. The light is always next to the night. Darkness can be the suffering of existence. But it can also be the cessation of that suffering.
Ultimately this is about the passing of time, the human mind, and change that seems to come suddenly. There is a book I read years ago called, Einstein's Space And Van Gogh's Sky wherein a Physicist and Psychologist try to combine the two disciplines into a new view of reality. I love the mash-up ya know. Also, I love to build things until they collapse upon and/or transcend themselves.
The ever-layering sonic landscape of this is kind of like that. Among the most sonically adventurous on the record, it is one of my favorites. How The Light Knows seemed like the natural beginning because it was this song that finally made me understand that I was making a record in darkness to honor the light.

I can't stop listening to Maintain. First time I heard it was performed with Jeff Austin Band and it was an instant favorite. It is a really great album for zoning out. It's like floating in the ocean past the breaking point, where the waves lift you but submerge you at the same time. Marisa Muldoon

There's a similarity in song writing between Richard Thompson and Hugh Cornwell which maybe isn't surprising as they went to the same school at the same time, although Thompson is older.
Due to Thompson's association with John French of Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band I searched for his work on the Bandcamp app. French, Thompson and Cornwell all have albums on the app which I'm very pleased about. Only Thompson has released contemporary albums, much to his credit. yellowcakeuf6
